Journaling Your Way to Better Health and Well-Being

More and more people are taking up the practice of journaling, and with good reason.  Journal writing is an incredibly powerful tool for improving every aspect of your health – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

As you write about different situations in your life, you can start to organize your thoughts while getting more in touch with your emotions.  Oftentimes, we don't even recognize all the different thoughts and feelings we may have at any given time.  Journal writing can help you identify and sort out exactly what you're experiencing and where your stress and tension is coming from.  There's a good chance you'll find yourself sleeping more peacefully as a result, since you no longer have all that disorganized activity in your mind – and the ensuing stress – to deal with.

In addition to reducing day-to-day stress, journaling also provides an opportunity for deeper healing, by allowing you to address past issues that are still affecting you.

Journaling for deeper healing.

As you explore past issues from the safety of where you're at today, you can look at events from different angles, with the aim of reframing them and resolving them.  The key here is to approach your writing with a clear focus and purpose.  You don't want to simply replay the past and get yourself stuck in an unproductive loop.  You want to examine and explore events in a way that leads to greater insight and understanding, so you can come to some type of resolution.  This allows you to heal while freeing you up to move forward.

Is a digital journal just as effective?

Putting pen to paper in a hard-copy journal or notebook is an enjoyable part of the writing experience for many people.  But maintaining a journal in a digital format is just as effective in terms of all the health benefits.  Whether you write by hand or type on a keypad, either method allows you to capture, sort through, and process your thoughts and feelings.

Digital journaling might also be the preferred option for someone who wants the ability to do their writing on the go, since most people have their devices with them at all times.  An electronic format can also be useful for searching and retrieving old journal entries.

Do you need to write every day?

There are no rules when it comes to journaling; the key is to explore and discover what works for you.  Many people feel good about committing to daily writing at a set time.  Other people find that their writing fluctuates along with their emotional state, and they prefer to write when the mood strikes them.  Ultimately, you're in control.  Journaling is a tool that everyone will use differently, and how you use it in your own life is entirely up to you.

If you're just getting started with the practice of journal writing, here are some helpful tips:

  • Whether you go with a hard-copy notebook or a digital journaling, select a format that you feel comfortable with and that you'll actually use.
  • Determine from the start how you will keep your journal private.  This is essential, so that you feel safe to express yourself openly, honestly, and freely.
  • Don't censor what you write, just let your raw thoughts and feelings come out.  This allows you to see what's really going on inside of you, and it can be quite revealing.
